Academic Officer, Fashioning Sudan Project
CALL FOR A PART TIME ACADEMIC OFFICER POSITION (TAP)
The Saxo Institute at the University of Copenhagen is pleased to announce a call for applications for a position as a part-time academic officer. The position is available part-time, 12 hours per week, from 1 May 2026 (or as soon as possible hereafter) until 31 December 2027. The position is funded by the research project Fashioning Sudan, financed by the European Research Council for 2022-2028.
Fashioning Sudan. Archaeology of Dress along the Middle Nile investigates the rich corpus of archaeological textiles and animal skins excavated in Sudan and Nubia and dated from the Bronze Age to the Late Medieval Period. The project merges different academic approaches (archaeology, textile & animal skin research, palaeoproteomics, and socio-cultural theory) to develop an interdisciplinary study of garments and highlight the entanglement of dress practices in the fabric of society.
The successful candidate will focus on supporting the research and dissemination activities of the project. This position is available for remote working, as location and/or strong ties with Egyptian and Sudanese research communities are a requirement. Full-time residence in Egypt and/or Sudan will be considered as a plus.
The successful candidate will be part of an international research group consisting of the Principal Investigator (PI), 4 postdoctoral fellows, MA students and guest researchers based at the Centre for Textile Research, Saxo institute, University of Copenhagen, under supervision of the PI.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The research team of Fashioning Sudan closely collaborates in all stages of the research process, and the selected candidate is expected to contribute substantially to this research method, in Denmark and in other countries. Collaborative research elements include:
- Willingness to work remotely using online meeting and co-working tools, in collaboration with different researchers, adapting to different work cultures in natural sciences and the humanities.
- Teaming up during research trips and conferences.
- Participating in regular meetings.
- Contributing to the research database and Open Access database.
- Participating in publications in the framework of Fashioning Sudan.
Tasks will cover the following:
- Graphic design and illustrations for publications and exhibition
- Data entry and data management on database software
- Textile documentation and inventorying
- Translations (Arabic/English)
- Development, local support, and relation for the organisation of the Fashioning Sudan conference in Cairo (April 2027)
QUALIFICATIONS
To be eligible for the position, the candidate should have previous experience in heritage management and/or dissemination in Sudan, with a good knowledge of the history of the Nile Valley. Computer skills in data management are a must, with working knowledge of database systems such as SQL. Graphic design experience, both in photo editing and vector drawing will also be required. The candidate should also have excellent command of English and Arabic. Finally, good organization skills and experience with art and/or heritage related events will be needed.

SALARY AND EMPLOYEMENT CONDITIONS
Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Association (AC). The salary range starts at DKK 9.400 (Euros 1200) per month + a 18,07 % contribution to the pension scheme 12 hours per week. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements in the hiring process.
