PhD Fellowship in Unconventional Magnetism - Niels Bohr Institute

We are offering a PhD fellowship in condensed matter theory commencing Dec. 1 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Our group and research
The PhD project will be carried out within the condensed matter theory group at the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI), University of Copenhagen. Significant collaboration is expected to take place with collaborators of Prof. Brian M. Andersen, and with other members of the condensed matter theory group, which include Profs. Per Hedegaard, Karsten Flensberg, Jens Paaske, Morten H. Christensen, and Andreas Kreisel as well as experimentalists at NBI, including the neutron scattering and quantum transport groups.

Project description

The PhD project is funded by a grant from the Danish Research Foundation (DFF-2), which also sponsors a post doc researcher to be hired at a later stage. The grant title is: “New Frontiers in Magnetism: Altermagnetism and Odd-Parity Spin Textures”. Thus, the main theme of the PhD project is unconventional magnetism, i.e. altermagnetism and odd-parity magnetism. What stabilizes and characterizes these newly discovered forms of matter, and how do we utilize their properties? In order to answer these questions, the PhD student will work with model calculations and use the toolbox of many-body condensed matter theory to gain new fundamental insight. It is also expected that we will collaborate with experimental groups, and therefore also apply more material-specific methods to help understand and guide experimental efforts. Finally, the project also includes effects of further instabilities in unconventional magnets, e.g. superconductivity and charge-ordered states. It remains an open question at present, what are the salient features of new ordered states emerging out of unconventional magnetic metals.

Principal supervisor isProf. Brian M. Andersen, Niels Bohr Institute, bma @ nbi.ku.dk. Phone: + 45 50 46 86 51

Start: December 1 2025.

Duration: 3 years as a PhD student.

Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD student at NBI are:

  • Carrying through an independent research project under supervision.
  • Completing PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS points.
  • Participating in active research environments including a stay at another research team.
  • Obtaining experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
  • Teaching and disseminating your knowledge.
  • Writing a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project, e.g. theoretical physics. Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years).

Other important criteria are:

  • The grade point average achieved.
  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project.
  • Previous publications.
  • Relevant work experience.
  • Other professional activities.
  • A curious mind-set with a strong interest in theoretical quantum physics and many-body theory.
  • Language skills.

Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. The Niels Bohr Institute is the Department of Physics at the University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and office facilities required for optimal working conditions.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 3 years. The start date is December 1 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The employment is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree.

Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary starts at approximately 30,800 DKK/Roughly 4,100 EUR (April 2025 level) plus pension.
