Research Software Engineer - Novo Nordisk Foundation CBMR
We are looking for a motivated Research Software Engineer to support the data management activities of the Data Analytics Platform at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR). The start date is January 1, 2026, or after agreement.
About us
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) was established in 2010 to conduct fundamental research on metabolism. The Center has around 260 employees, consisting of 21 research groups and 5 technology platforms, who work in a vibrant international research environment with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration. Our researchers share a common purpose as they seek to transform the basic understanding of the mechanisms involved in metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. The Center’s research has resulted in seminal discoveries as to how genes, hormones, and environmental factors influence metabolic health and disease throughout life. You can read more about us here: https://cbmr.ku.dk/.
The Data Analytics Platform sits at the heart of CBMR and consists of nine full-time employees. The Platform supports researchers by providing expertise and support for data management, processing and visualisation. In total, we integrate data from more than a million biological samples. Measurements include information on genetic variation and other omics data, anthropometrics and biochemical measurements. The Data Analytics Platform operates an on-prem high-performance compute cluster and has a leading role in the Center’s cloud activities. Your job
Your main task will lie in supporting our scientists with research data management, like gathering and curating data from various origins to make information findable and available to researchers. Governance of the data needs to adhere to best practices for sensitive records, which is particularly important when migrating files to HPC systems (internal and external), cloud resources or working with third party databases.
You will also work closely together with bioinformaticians and researchers at multiple levels to expand our current phenotypic database and integrate it with other heterogeneous data sources, such as genotypic data and data from the Danish registries. This includes basic quality control of the data variables, often in close collaboration with researchers to ensure completeness of metadata and clarity of naming. The platform also develops web-applications enabling users to query the data as well as to upload new information.
Your profile:
Essential criteria:
- Master’s degree or higher in computer science, bioinformatics or a similar field; alternatively a bachelor’s degree paired with several year’s of work experience in a relevant position
- Excellent programming skills with an object-oriented language
- Proven experience with code version control
- Experience with accessing or storing data in databases
- Familiarity with Unix shells
- Strong collaborative skills and the ability to share knowledge and expertise
- Good written and oral communication skills in English
Desirable criteria:
- Familiarity with management of research data
- Proficiency setting up and maintaining cloud resources (any provider)
- Experience with automated build systems and deployment methodologies
- Ability to perform administrative tasks in Linux
- Background in developing web applications
- Understanding of data processing under GDPR regulations
- Interest in application of AI/ML methods
Place of employment
The place of employment is the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.
Terms of salary and employment
The employment as Research Software Engineer (AC-TAP FU) is a full time and limited to three years. The start date is January 1, 2026, or after agreement. Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or according to the agreement on IT Professionals in the State (PROSA). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications.
