Your work tasks
Do you want to shape the future of autonomous systems and intelligent sensing, and contribute to breakthrough research in defence technologies for GPS-denied environments?

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a passion for research in robotics, AI, signal processing, and autonomous systems to join the SonicEye research project, funded by the National Defence Technology Centre (NFC) and conducted in collaboration with leading research and technology stakeholders.

The vision of SonicEye is to develop multimodal navigation by enabling AI-powered echolocation and safe decision-making for autonomous robots in uncertain environments, unlocking reliable perception and navigation where GNSS/GPS cannot be trusted or is unavailable. The project combines ultrasonic sensing, probabilistic perception, and machine learning with advanced robotics, and will deliver a system capable of situational awareness under harsh and contested conditions.

You will work at the intersection of robotics, advanced sensing, control, and AI, tackling challenges such as:

  • Acoustic sensing and signal processing in complex environments
  • AI-driven perception and scene inference from ultrasonic echoes
  • Autonomous navigation in GPS-denied / degraded environments
  • Integration and testing on robotic platforms in the lab and in field-like conditions

The assignments for a Research Assistant include developing solutions for the technologies within the consortium, as well as collaborating on adjacent research topics. As a Post-Doctoral Researcher, an additional and greater emphasis is placed on the development of independent research that can benefit both the field and the project.

Your competencies

We thus imagine that you:

  • have a strong background in digital signal processing and machine learning;
  • have substantial experience with scientific computing in Python/C++/ROS;
  • know recent neural network architectures for machine learning (e.g., CNNs, RNNs, GANs);
  • understand AI-perception, SLAM, Robotics and autonomy;
  • communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing;
  • work independently and show initiative, while also collaborating well in a multidisciplinary team.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a research assistant requires academic qualifications at a master's degree level.
Appointment as a postdoc requires academic qualifications at the PhD level.

Who we are
On this journey, you will be supervised by the Advanced Robotics & AI research group (Shahab Heshmati-Alamdari) and the Audio Analysis Lab (Jesper Rindom Jensen) at Aalborg University, and work closely with external partners to ensure the research translates into deployable prototypes, rigorous testing and validation, and real-world uptake in defence and dual-use applications. This setup offers a strong academic–industrial foundation and the freedom to explore. The primary workplace will be the Advanced Robotics & AI research group at Aalborg University in Aalborg.
