Associate Professor, Applied & Intelligent Power Electronic Systems
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, three permanent positions as Associate Professor within the Section of Applied Power Electronic Systems (APES) are open for appointments. The position is located at the Aalborg campus and is available from 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
We invite applications from candidates who will strengthen and complement APES across electromagnetic compatibility, converter reliability and testing, advanced control of power converters and drives, and system-level optimization of converter-dominated and energy-storage-integrated systems.
Your work tasks
As Associate Professor, you will strengthen our research, education, and innovation in applied power electronics by advancing how power electronic converters and systems are designed, controlled, validated, and deployed to enable stable, efficient, reliable and electromagnetically compatible operation in industrial and societal applications.
The positions collectively cover (and applicants may contribute to one or more of) the following focus areas:
A) Reliability of power electronic converters and components
You will strengthen research on reliability-oriented design and operation, including condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, lifetime estimation, and accelerated testing of critical components (e.g., capacitors and power semiconductors). The work may include physics-of-failure models, stress/lifetime modelling, and experimental validation via accelerated test methodologies.
B) Advanced control of power converters
You will contribute to the development and validation of high-performance control methods for power converters, including (but not limited to) model predictive control, adaptive control, and modulation strategies, as well as control for multi-level converters, grid-connected converters, and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
C) Power electronic systems electromagnetic compatibility and energy storage with specific focus on DC systems integrationYou will contribute to system-level research addressing converter-dominated grids and DC systems, including stability and control, system architecture and operational optimization, and integration of energy storage (including modelling, monitoring/diagnostics, and aspects of battery management systems where relevant).
Moreover, you will contribute to research on EMI/EMC analysis, modelling, measurement, and mitigation in power electronic converters and converter-dominated systems. This includes work on power quality, filtering and layout-aware design, and EMC-aware validation in laboratory environments, often in collaboration with industry.
D) Data-driven and AI-assisted methods for power electronics
Across the above areas, you are expected to contribute to model-based and data-driven/AI-based methods, including digital twins, physics-informed learning, data analytics, and AI-assisted control/maintenance, to enhance performance, reliability and maintainability of power electronic systems.
Teaching and supervision are integral parts of the positions. You will teach primarily at Master’s and PhD level within Energy Engineering and Power Electronics programs and supervise BSc/MSc projects and theses, as well as contribute to PhD supervision within your area. You will be expected to contribute to course development, assessment tasks, and relevant departmental committees and boards.
You are also expected to take an active role in externally funded research, including national, European, and industry-funded activities, and to contribute to initiating, developing, and leading project applications and research collaborations.
The positions are offered in relation to the research groups “EMI/EMC in Power Electronics”, “Reliability of Power Electronic Converters”, and “Power Electronic Control, Reliability and System Optimization”, and you will be positioned within the APES section at AAU Energy.
Your competencies
We are seeking colleagues with a strong and well-documented research profile in power electronics and energy systems. The successful applicants are expected to demonstrate several of the following qualifications:
Research profile and technical expertise
- Documented research excellence within one or more of the following areas:
- EMI/EMC in power electronics, power quality and mitigation,
- Reliability of converters and components, including condition monitoring, lifetime estimation and accelerated testing,
- Advanced control and modulation of converters and drives (e.g., predictive/adaptive/AI-assisted control),
- system-level optimization, stability and control of converter-dominated and/or DC systems with energy storage integration, including BMS-related modelling/monitoring where relevant.
- Strong competence in modelling and simulation and experimental validation of power electronic converters/systems, including laboratory-based prototyping and measurement-based verification.
- Experience with data-driven and AI methods (e.g., digital twins, physics-informed approaches, ML for control/monitoring/diagnostics) is considered a strong advantage.
Research leadership and collaboration
- Demonstrated ability to conduct and deliver research projects in close collaboration with academic and industrial partners, and experience contributing to or leading externally funded activities.
- A visible publication record in recognized international journals and conferences, and an international research profile supported by collaborations, projects and/or stays abroad.
Teaching and supervision
- Documented teaching and supervision experience, including course responsibility and supervision of student projects, and engagement in PhD supervision.
- The candidate should be prepared to teach in Danish in the future, as bachelor-level courses are primarily offered in Danish. Skills in Danish will therefore be positively evaluated. If Danish proficiency is not already present, the candidate will be expected to demonstrate an active effort to learn Danish as a second or third language.
Qualification requirementsAppointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.
It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international standard. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.
How to apply
Your application must include the following:
- Application, stating reasons for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Diplomas (master's degree diploma and PhD diploma)
- List of publications, with an indication of the attached publications that you wish to be taken into account in the assessment. You may attach a maximum of ten publications.
