PhD Scholarship in Palaeogenomics at DTU Health Tech

Job Content, Responsibilities, Tasks, and Qualifications
Your overall focus will be to develop and apply novel bioinformatics methods that reduce bias and improve the accuracy of genomic analyses when high-quality DNA or close reference genomes are unavailable. As part of a Novo Nordisk Foundation-funded project, you will design and implement computational pipelines, conduct comparative assessments of data quality effects on genomic inference, and apply these methods to real datasets from extinct species. You will help shape how the field extracts meaningful biological signals from challenging samples, generating robust insights into evolutionary history, population dynamics, and extinction processes.
Your primary tasks will be to:
- Develop bioinformatics pipelines for assembling genomes from degraded DNA
- Analyse downstream population genomic metrics of extinct species
- Contribute to software documentation, tutorials, and user training
Qualifications:
- A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, evolutionary genomics, or a related field
- Proficiency in programming/scripting (e.g., Python, R, or Bash)
- Familiarity with next-generation sequencing data and genome assembly tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team
Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The period of employment is 3 years. The starting date is 1 February 2026 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
