Student Bioinformatics Assistant at Statens Serum Institut

About us
Statens Serum Institut (SSI) is under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Health. Our main duty is to ensure preparedness against infectious diseases and biological threats as well as control of congenital disorders. Our mission is to strengthen health through disease control and research.

The position is located at the National Reference Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance (NRL-AMR), which is part of the Department for Bacteria, Parasites and Fungi at Statens Serum Institute. The section monitors bacterial infections in humans, antimicrobial resistance and provides specialized diagnostic testing.

At NRL-AMR you will join a multidisciplinary team of bioinformaticians, data scientists, microbiologists, veterinarians, molecular biologists, and laboratory technicians. We are engaged in several national and international research and surveillance projects, including EU collaborations, and trainings under the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) and the European Commission.

About the position
We are currently looking for a student assistant with strong bioinformatic skills to support surveillance, routine tasks, ongoing research and development activities. As part of the team, you will:

  • Work with whole genome sequencing data of bacterial pathogens
  • Support routine tasks related to surveillance for antimicrobial resistance activities
  • Perform data extraction, processing, visualization, and analysis
  • Support research projects through bioinformatic assistance

You will work closely with experienced bioinformaticians and scientists, and have the opportunity to develop your skills in applied bioinformatics with real-world data and public health challenges. Furthermore, you might be involved in training activities for bioinformaticians, molecular microbiologist and epidemiologist as part of the NRL-AMR function.

Education, experience and personal qualifications
You are currently enrolled in a relevant higher education program (e.g. bioinformatics, molecular biology, computer science, data science, microbiology, biotechnology or related fields), either as a BSc or MSc student. You should have some experience with bioinformatics.

  • Have experience in Python programming and bioinformatic analyses
  • Are familiar with Unix/Linux environments and command-line tools
  • Have an interest in microbial genomics and/or antimicrobial resistance
  • Experience with R and RStudio

Terms of employment
You will be employed in accordance with the applicable collective agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and the Public Employees’ Organisations (the OAOS Joint Agreement), and the organisational agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and HK/Stat for clerical staff, laboratory technicians, and IT employees (HK), pursuant to the provisions of the agreement concerning hourly-paid employees.

The position is part-time approximately 10 hours per week, with flexibility during exam periods.

The position is temporary (2 years) with start soon as possible.
