Student Assistant in Part-Scale Modelling in Laser Additive Manufacturing of Cop

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet logoStudentermedhjælp · Lyngby-Taarbæk ·

If you are eager to kick-start your scientific career and work at the forefront of advanced manufacturing simulations, this opportunity is for you. At DTU, you will contribute to cutting-edge research in laser-based additive manufacturing, combining thermo-mechanical modelling and numerical simulation approaches to understand and optimize the printing of copper alloys.

Applications are invited for a position within the field of thermo-mechanical simulation of laser-based 3D printing, as part of the EU-funded GlobalAM project. The position focuses on modelling residual stress development and temperature evolution during laser processing of metallic materials.

The project involves implementing high-fidelity thermo-mechanical models developed at DTU Construct, section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP) and applying them to simulate process-induced phenomena in laser printing. In addition, the work includes developing reduced-order models based on these high-fidelity simulations to enable faster and more efficient predictions.

The job

The main objective of this position is to investigate the relationship between process parameters and resulting thermal and mechanical responses during laser-based additive manufacturing of copper alloys.

You will be responsible for implementing and running thermo-mechanical simulations to predict temperature fields and residual stresses. Furthermore, you will contribute to the development of reduced-order models to simplify complex simulations while maintaining predictive accuracy.

In addition to the research activities, you will assist the project leader in supervision and training tasks related to M.Sc. theses and specialized courses at the Section MPP. You will also support dissemination activities, including preparation of conference papers and journal publications.

Our expectations of you

We envision that:

  • You have a strong interest in numerical modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes.
  • You are motivated to work with complex physical models and translate them into efficient FEM simulation tools.
  • You have experience with programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or similar).
  • You have a background in thermo-mechanics, finite element modeling, or related fields.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing or laser-based processes is an advantage.
  • You are comfortable working in a research environment and collaborating on academic dissemination activities.

What we offer in return

At DTU, you will be part of one of Europe's leading research and educational institutions. You enter an organization that aims to develop knowledge at an international level. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the multi-union collective agreement for the Organisations of Public Employees—Denmark (State) (OAO-S) and the trade union agreement for clerical staff etc. (HK/State).

Working hours are on average 16 hours per week and can be organized flexibly in relation to holidays, exams, etc. Starting date as soon as possible (or according to mutual agreement). The period of employment is 6 months.

The workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus.

Application and contact

Please submit your online application no later than Wednesday, 29 April 2026 (23:59 Danish time) . Open the “Apply now” link, fill out the form and attach your motivated application, CV and documentation for study activity. In the application, we would like to hear a little about you, your competencies and why you are applying for the position.

If you would like additional information about the position, please contact Associate Professor Mohamad Bayat (mbayat@dtu.dk ).

You can read more about Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at www.construct.dtu.dk.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.
